Today marks 7 months until the release of YOUR LIF Today marks 7 months until the release of YOUR LIFE HAS BEEN DELAYED, and I’m sharing a watch list of TV shows, movies, and even a documentary series connected to the book. I go into much more behind-the-scenes info on my blog (link in bio), but here’s the brief rundown.

- Beverly Hills, 9021 - Jenny’s favorite show!
- Back to the Future - All of them. And Part II is especially fun with the predictions about the 21st century.
- Miss Congeniality - Part of a key scene with her now-adult best friend.
- The Computer Chronicles - There’s a link to a particular 1995 episode on my blog that gives key insight into the internet in Jenny’s time.
- The Nineties/2000s miniseries - Such a great overview of these decades!
- The Hunger Games - Jenny’s intro to the YA book-to-movie industry.
- The Karate Kid - A sibling bonding movie 😀
- Interview with the Vampire - The hot vampires of the ‘90s 🔥

Also on my blog, you can find my playlist (9 months) and title story (8 months). If you have any special requests for future countdown features, let me know!

I’m excited to feature THE QUANTUM WEIRDNESS OF I’m excited to feature THE QUANTUM WEIRDNESS OF THE ALMOST KISS by @amy.noelle.parks for #DebutAuthorReads today. And thanks to @louisegooding_author for inviting #the21ders to join in!

I adored this book! Told in alternating viewpoints between best friends Caleb and Evie, it’s set at a boarding school that specializes in science and math. Caleb has been in love with Evie forever (and has tallied up more than a dozen almost-kisses), while Evie just hasn’t been interested in romance—until Leo impresses her with a beautiful physics solution. The story centers around entering a competition to be considered for Frontier, a prestigious math competition. Evie and Caleb work on a project together that involves her math and his coding, while Leo enters on his own. Obviously that gets… awkward.

I loved how this story handled all of the various characters without turning anyone into a villain, which is something that easily could have happened. Caleb, Evie, and Leo are all great characters, and I also really loved Evie’s best friend, Bex. In addition to including a ton of math and physics (yay for smart teens!), it also tackled Evie’s anxiety, teens working through real issues with their parents, and figuring out what you really want in a relationship. Just a fantastic story all around.

Since I had such a hard time answering this question, do you have a favorite romantic comedy movie? Maybe there are still some more I need to go watch…

When I showed my middle schooler the list of #the2 When I showed my middle schooler the list of #the21ders books releasing on Jan. 5, he was immediately intrigued by the premise for ROOT MAGIC by @edenroycebooks, so today I’m turning the feed over to him for a review.

Set in 1963 in South Carolina against the backdrop of school integration, the book follows twins Jezebel and Jay Turner as they start training in rootwork, the African American folk magic that has been a legacy of their family for generations.

Here’s what my middle schooler had to say:

“ROOT MAGIC is really cool. It’s based on Gullah-Geechee culture. It talks about how root magic workers have the ability to make potions and charms and also do magic themselves and basically help the world. It also talks about bullies as well as the different problems of that time, like how police officers were going in and ransacking homes.

“It was engaging and interesting with the magic and their folklore. It showed you what their life was like and it also had some great themes, like no matter who people are, be nice and kind to them. And it just was a really inspiring book. I would recommend it.”

Definitely a book to add to your TBR! I’ll be sharing more reviews from my junior in-house reviewers as they often get to these fantastic debuts before I can.

The premise for @marti.leimbach’s DRAGONFLY GIRL The premise for @marti.leimbach’s DRAGONFLY GIRL immediately intrigued me: Kira Adams has discovered a cure for death – and now her life is in danger. Um, yes, please!

It's about a science genius who's awkward, shy, and doesn't fit in at school. When her paper on dragonfly hunting patterns wins an international science contest (kudos for how well the science is explained in the book!), she finally finds her people--although they're all adults. Her work draws the attention of a celebrated scientist and she begins working at a top-secret lab, and while conducting an experiment, she revives a rat in her care.

There's so much to love in this story. A super-smart girl, constantly escalating stakes, academic rivalry and cooperation. I also love how this story shows multiple aspects of friendship, from long-term solidarity to the instant bond of like minds to the kind that grows out of hardship. And did I mention the awesome science girl? Definitely merits another plug!

DRAGONFLY GIRL releases Feb. 23, so add it to your lists!!

Happy birthday to my main character, Jenny! While Happy birthday to my main character, Jenny!

While I do always give my characters birthdates, they don’t always make it into the actual book. With Jenny jumping forward in time, her age is a major plot point—particularly in relation to everyone who’s passed her by. The actual date is mentioned in the book as well, but I chose this teaser because I honestly don’t know how the DMV would treat a time traveler’s license. I’m assuming they would NOT consider it valid 😂.

Jenny’s birthday doesn’t actually happen in YOUR LIFE HAS BEEN DELAYED since the story takes place several months before January, so give me your opinion. Considering Jenny’s skipped 25 years, do you think she would be turning 18 or 43 on this birthday?

Her legal paperwork is going to be forever confusing…
